Package: tetex-extra
Version: 1.0.2+20011202-2
Severity: normal

Hi,

I just upgraded to testing, and my current .tex project did not compile
any longer. It complained about the lack of caption.sty and
algorithmic.sty. Upon lookup in my locate-database (still from before
the update), caption.sty should be found in
/usr/src/texmf/tex/latex/caption/capton.sty, but there's only
caption2.sty. For algorithmic, the directory
/usr/src/texmf/tex/latex/algorith does not exist any longer.
Maybe this applies to other tex packages as well.
Manually downgrading to tetex-extra from stable solved the problem for
the moment.

Cheers,

S. Pado

At the time that the tetex-* packages in testing were being
assembled, there were a number of packages that had licensing
problems that prevented us from distributing them.

We have been working with Thomas Esser (teTeX upstream) and the
authors of these packages to resolve these issues. Packages whose
authors showed interest in changing their licenses to be DFSG-free
were left in Debian's teTeX packages; those whose authors could
not be found or were uninterested in changing their licenses were
removed both from Debian's packages and from Thomas's upstream
teTeX distribution.

Since that point, some additional authors have responded, and
their packages have been added to teTeX upstream. caption.sty is
one of those.

When Thomas releases the next version of teTeX, Debian will sync
with it and the next versions of Debian's packages will contain
all the files that were removed whose licenses have changed.

No one has been able to track down the author of algorithm.sty and
algorithms.sty, Peter Williams, so it is unlikely that those
packages will be present in future releases of teTeX.

A complete list of packages that were removed is available in
/usr/share/doc/tetex-base/README.Debian (with the affected
tetex-base, extra, and doc packages installed). For your
reference, that list is

   algorithm.sty euler.sty
   algorithmic.sty footbib.sty
   beton.sty fvrb-ex.sty
   booktabs.sty picinpar.sty
   caption.sty

The Sueterlin and Old German font packages have also been removed.

All of these font and LaTeX packages are available from the
Comprehensive TeX Archive Network (CTAN), and can be installed in
your local texmf tree (usually /usr/local/share/texmf or
/usr/local/lib/texmf).
