Really? I doubt this.

>         \begin{equation} \bf\vec{x} \end{equation}

Command like \bf should not be used inside math environment
like "equation", I believe.

The correct command might depend on what you want to do.
Do you want a bold type face or an arrow above a letter or both
for a vector?

In any way, this does not show that amsmath is broken.
