Note the trailing colon in my example. It isn't there by accident.
Guess I'm blind, didn't see it... LaTeX is much happier now. This will certainly be of use, though I'd still like --output-dir --output-dir would be like (sort of) assuming that the default location is not writable, and setting TEXMFOUTPUT and possibly TEXINPUTS.
