erik@vulcain:~ > xdvi privat/studium/form_sem/ueb2.ps
Could not open dvi file. Exiting.
erik@vulcain:~ >

afterwards a netscape window is popping up.
it has URL
file:privat/studium/form_sem/ueb2.ps

which is of course wrong because
it is relative and not absolute.

if netscape wasn't running before i started the xdvi,
he'll do nothing. i.e. not start a netscape.

if no netscape is installed, but communicator,
he will say
othmar@davinci [othmar]$ sh: netscape: command not found

i don't know what he does if neither netscape nor communicator,
but i have lynx installed.
or what happens if X is not running.
will he use lynx then ? even though netscape is installed ?

suggested fix:

;set flame-mode on
why the hell does xdvi think he needs to display a .ps file?
he sais "Could not open dvi file. Exiting.", so why is he still
opening the .ps file with a browser ??????
xdvi is a dvi viewer and NOTHING else!
and if for some reason this really has to be happening, then
1. netscape must be started if not already running
it is not OK to just silently do nothing!
2. the URL must be absolute, not relative, because
the relative URL will generate a "not found" error
3. if netscape is not installed, another browser must be used
like lynx or whatever is installed.
4. he must say a clear message, like
"That is not a dvi file. i will use your browser"
   and NOT
"Could not open dvi file. Exiting."
which clearly does not explain what he is really doing.
;set flame-mode off

cu ;)
