Hi,

here is the problem:

$ zcat /usr/share/doc/texmf/latex/general/essential.dvi.gz > /tmp/essential.dvi
$ dvips /tmp/essential.dvi -o /dev/null

I don't know if this is a bug in essential.dvi or in dvips.

Curiously, xdvi does not complain.
