Subject: document class 'letter' doesn't understand \opening
Date: Tue, 03 Apr 2001 18:35:51 +1000
Delivered-To: submit@bugs.debian.org

Package: tetex-doc
Version: 1.0.2+20000804-7
Severity: important

in /usr/share/doc/texmf/latex/latex2e-html/ltx-91.html :

   \begin{letter}{Mr. John Doe \\ 2345 Jones St.
         \\ Oakland, CA  91123}
   \opening{Dear John,}
     ...
     text of letter
     ...
   \closing{Best regards,}
   \end{letter}

Firstly, latex doesn't like:

! LaTeX Error: Missing \begin{document}.

Secondly, if \begin{letter} is replaced with \begin{document}:

! Undefined control sequence.
\opening ...ace {2\parskip }{\raggedright \toname
                                                  \\ \toaddress \par }\vspac...
l.7     \opening{Dear John,}

As this is the only documentation for the letter class that I can find on my system, I consider this a bug.

The submitter did misunderstand the documentation in
/usr/share/doc/texmf/latex/latex2e-html/ltx-91.html .

cu,
Adrian
