I do not think that this is of help for possible
tetex-update package but for reference let me explain
my latex-cur (the latex LaTeX) package.

My strategy at present is basically as follows;

- not replacing any existence files of tetex-* at all
- so if user removes latex-cur then the original state of tetex-*
  will be recovered without problem.
- put files of latex-cur in /usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/200006base/
(for example in case latex-cur 20000601-1) so that latex will
  find a file of latex-cur.
I am not sure but because "200006base" < "base" so latex
  searches first /usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/200006base/ and
  then searches /usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/base/ of tetex-base
  as far as I experienced.

So when tetex-base (or tetex-bin?) includes LaTeX of 2000/06/01
and if it sets Conflicts: latex-cur (<= 20000601-99) then unnecessary
latex-cur will be removed automatically.

After that if LaTeX 2001/06/01 will be released then latex-cur
20010601 will be made and it can safely co-exist with tetex-*
and user can safely select to install latex-cur on not.
It depends on a user.

If tetex-update takes the same strategy there might be chance to
work fine.

Best Regards, 2001.6.2
