The configure failed both with it set and unset.
I did a purge/reinstall of tetex-bin and for some reason
no /etc/texmf/texmf.cnf file was generated. This seems to be why the
configure fails.
I've been having some problems with this machine and am going to do a
full reinstall today; if the problem persists after that, I will tell
you more.
