Bug#1113715: upgrade-reports: grub menu fails, goes to bios configuration screen
Package: upgrade-reports
Severity: normal
X-Debbugs-Cc: claude@mathr.co.uk
My previous release is: bookworm
I am upgrading to: trixie
Archive date: 2025-09-01
Upgrade date: 2025-09-01
uname -a before upgrade: (sorry I did not keep a copy)
uname -a after upgrade: Linux eiskaffee 6.12.41+deb13-amd64 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Debian 6.12.41-1 (2025-08-12) x86_64 GNU/Linux
Method: apt full-upgrade
- Were there any non-Debian packages installed before the upgrade? If
so, what were they?
wine from winehq, maybe virtualbox from oracle
- Was the system pre-update a 'pure' system only containing packages
from the previous release? If not, which packages were not from that
release?
kernel and probably some other things from bookworm backports
- Did any packages fail to upgrade?
python3 failed to upgrade initially because apt-listbugs somehow
pinned some python things to -30000 priority, removing the file
allowed upgrade to continue without issues.
kernel required manual reinstallation due to apt removing the
currently running version or something.
- Were there any problems with the system after upgrading?
Yes, quite severe:
On first reboot, grub menu failed to load and my motherboard's
bios configuration screen was displayed.
I needed to reboot to a bookworm live usb I had handy, chroot
into the installed system, and reinstall grub with apt.
This pulled in a package, grub-efi-amd64, which had not been
installed previously.
After reinstalling grub, the next reboot worked fine.
