Bug#1095718: upgrade-reports: Autoupdate message during boot misplaced
Package: upgrade-reports
Severity: minor
X-Debbugs-Cc: peer.sommerlund@gmail.com
I have a well functioning Debian 12 that automatically detects when software
needs to be updated. If this is the case, it offers to reboot and install it.
Today 2025-02-11 I had one of these updates, and watched the screen while
the system was booting.
The normal boot screen is a long list of green OK boxes, but when an
automatic update occurrs, there is a small spinner with a red
asterix "*" that bounches left and right.
During boot, the screen is in text mode. I counted 55 lines in total.
I would expect this message to be at the bottom of the screen, but it
is at line 29, 30, 47, and 48.
I took a picture of the screen - here are the important lines
29: Installing updates: this could take a while...
30: Updating system [ OK ] Started dbus.service . ....
47: [ **] Job packagekit-oflineupdate.service/start running (3min 8s / no limit)
48: [ **] Job packagekit-oflineupdate.service/start running (2min 14s / no limit)
This is purely a cosmetic bug report, everything works as expected.
I have seen this happen every time I watch the boot screen during updates.
I have been using Debian for, maybe a year. I don't remember.
Upgrade date: 2025-02-11
uname -a after upgrade: Linux byolimit2 6.1.0-31-amd64 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Debian 6.1.128-1 (2025-02-07) x86_64 GNU/Linux
Method: Using a graphical environment, say yes to reboot when the system
tells me important updates are available that require reboot.
