Hi Adam Lurking here for years. My first reply :) I`ve been getting the same thing if I try to invoke dselect with sudo. Works fine if I su instead. Hope this helps. The last line there highlights the cause of the problem - both ldconfig and start-stop-daemon are in /sbin, which is assumed to be on root's PATH, and must have the execute bit set.
