Package: upgrade-reports Hello, one week ago I upgraded from Lenny to Squeeze. I followed the release notes (apt-get update, upgrade, install linux-image-2.6-686, install udev; reboot; apt-get dist-upgrade) and got only some warnings, except in the last step when X ran into trouble. Summary of mentionable events: While upgrading udev, the known man-db messages concerning locale settings appeared (bug #596651). I got rid of them by adding LANGUAGE="de_DE.UTF-8" and LC_ALL="de_DE.UTF-8" in /etc/default/locale and reinstalling the affected packages. (Or was it already fixed by setting up locales?) Just before the upgrade I did "dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg" (like it is suggested in xorg.conf) to give Xorg another chance to detect my screen. Then, while the dist-upgrade step, when X was restarted it showed up with a crazy colored screen and was not responding anymore on keyboard or mouse. I logged in with ssh and noticed that X was using nearly all the CPU resources. The script logging was stopped (at 21:57) with the following last lines: [...] kdebase-data (4:4.4.5-1) wird eingerichtet ... kdebase-bin (4:4.4.5-1) wird eingerichtet ... imagemagick (8:6.6.0.4-3) wird eingerichtet ... tex-common (2.08) wird eingerichtet ... Replacing config file /etc/texmf/texmf.d/05TeXMF.cnf with new version Replacing config file /etc/texmf/texmf.d/15Plain.cnf with new version Replacing config file /etc/texmf/texmf.d/45TeXinputs.cnf with new By temporarily using my old xorg.conf from Lenny, I got X restarted with an error message on the login screen (perhaps similar to bug #604915) which saved me because now I could have access to the virtual console again, where the upgrade process was waiting for an answer (if replacing ntp.conf or not). The rest went fine and after rebooting the above problem (of X hang-up) disappeared. (Also upgrade-from-grub-legacy was successful.) I would like to send you the relevant Xorg logfiles, but unfortunately I don't have it anymore. (I thought they would be backuped like some other logfiles, but they are overwritten. So I can only send you the current Xorg.0.log and dmesg, without to know if it's helpful. I think that "nouveau" was involved somehow, when I got the error message with my old Lenny xorg.conf, but this seems to be not so important for the hanging X and I'm not so sure anymore...) It's possible, that this X hang-up is related to other reported bugs like #604724, and perhaps #607382 and #607581. At least it could be helpful to have a hint in the release notes how to stop the graphical login screen while the upgrade (and in case of X problems to save the logfile before rebooting). I'm sorry that I can not give you more detailed informations. But if you can tell me where to find it or how to reproduce the bug (by down- and upgrading some packages?) I would try to go further... Thanks for your work on this great operating system!
