Bug#612230: upgrade-reports: lenny->squeeze apt-get update fails because whiptail cannot open the shared library libnewt.so.0.52

On the initial apt-get update as suggested by section 4.4.4 (Minimal system upgrade) of the
release notes, it stops with:

Preparing to replace libpam0g 1.0.1-5+lenny1 (using .../libpam0g_1.1.1-6.1_i386.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement libpam0g ...
Setting up libpam0g (1.1.1-6.1) ...
Checking for services that may need to be restarted...Checking init scripts...
whiptail: error while loading shared libraries: libnewt.so.0.52: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
debconf: whiptail output the above errors, giving up!
dpkg: error processing libpam0g (--configure):
 subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 255
Errors were encountered while processing:
 libpam0g
