IIRC, the upgrade from sarge to etch was a monstrous event; in the end, 
on machines that used X, it was easier just to reinstall.  This was, 
apparently, because too many major changes happened to X simultaneously 
-- change from Xfree to Xorg, a new modular architecture, and just to 
make life awkward, a new udev.

On my machine that didn't run X, it was a breeze.
