no automatic detection of dvd insertion into drive

Hi all,

I use etch (upgraded essentially daily) and, as opposed to what happens 
with a cd rom disc (which, by inserting into my combo cd-dvd LG drive, 
is automatically detected: a window pops up asking me what to do...), a 
dvd disc is not automatically detected. What should I do?
