Ah:
  apt-get install nvidia-kernel-legacy-source
  m-a prepare nvidia-kernel-legacy-source
  m-a auto-install nvidia-kernel-legacy-source
starts building the module but then aborts with some compilation error
(missing struct member in some OS interface code). Presumably that's
why there's no stock legacy modules!

There's a bunch of stuff about the error in BTS as 368541, including
some links to a patch and fixed packages at
http://zbla.net/debian/
(in nvidia-graphics-drivers-legacy-1.0.7174-4-rlimfix+sarge0/ )
I installed the source module from there and had no problem m-a building
a working legacy nvidia module.
