It would almost certainly be easier to just reinstall than to fix your
current installation.  Keep a copy of /etc around so you don't have to
reconfigure everything.  "dpkg --get-selection" and "dpkg --set-selections"
will let your new system have the same packages installed as the old.

And if you were using ext3 or another journaling filesystem, that sort of
corruption really shouldn't happen.
