I did this too, a few weeks ago. The upgrade was about as rough as
yours, but it left me with a nonworking system. So I ask: Does your
system boot properly? Mine will only boot reliably into maintenance
mode. (by entering etch 1 at the lilo prompt). X sometimes comes up
and sometimes doesnt. Only xdm seems to work (not gdm I used to use)
and then it will only start gnome.
If yours works, perhaps it's time for me to try again.
