I need explicit instructions on how to do this. I have never used
chroot before. Can you tell me  please?

Something similar happened to me once too. In my case I booted from an ubuntu
live CD and chrooted and ran update-grub to put grub back in the mbr. I'm not
shure of lilo but I think you'll need to do something similar.
