Looking at the upgrade log, it looks like a problem with APT or dpkg:

Selecting previously deselected package gnome-applets-data.
Unpacking gnome-applets-data (from .../gnome-applets-data_2.8.2-1_all.deb) ...
Replacing files in old package gnome-applets ...
[ ... ]
Preparing to replace gnome-applets 1.4.0.5-2 (using .../gnome-applets_2.8.2-1_i386.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement gnome-applets ...
[ ... ]
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of gnome-applets:
 gnome-applets depends on gnome-applets-data (= 2.8.2-1); however:
Package gnome-applets-data is not configured yet.
dpkg: error processing gnome-applets (--configure):
 dependency problems - leaving unconfigured

And then with apt-get -f install:
Setting up gnome-applets (2.8.2-1) ...
Setting up gnome-applets-data (2.8.2-1) ...
Installing new version of config file /etc/sound/events/mailcheck.soundlist ...

Anyone has more clues about what happened and what could be done to fix it?
