cannot install Sarge

I, a semi-knowledgeable Linux user, have received a Jan 22, 2005 version of Sarge on CDs 1, 2, an 3 from a mirror listed on the Debian site. The installation stops and refuses to play nice after asking me for the Ethernet driver. I do not use an Ethernet driver nor any other similar connection on my box. When I try to force the installation bypassing the ethernet request, the installation seems to continue processing but yields a garbled Sarge which won't run at all. I can't figure out precisely where the installation is going wrong, but it seems not to be installing either a grub or a lilo loader (I've tried both.)

I have Slackware 10.0 working on hda1 and am trying to install Sarge on hda3 (swap on hda2) with lots of memory to spare.

I'd appreciate any assistance.

Thanks,

sam
