no inittab file after debian sarge net-inst

Hi there,

I am attempting to install debian sarge. The installer follows all steps 
without fail, but on boot, I get the following messages:

<output>

INIT: version 2.6.8 booting
INIT: No inittab file found

Enter runlevel: _

</output>

Then when entering any runlevel, I get the following:

<output>

INIT: Entering runlevel: *
INIT: no more processes in this runlevel

</output>

This happened when entering runlevels 1-7, and when installing with 
linux26 and expert26.

Could anyone help please.
