I don't know how everybody else does it, but the way I do it is that, I know
all hardware which is in my system, and I simply compile the appropriate
drivers into my kernel.

Last I heard the beta installer should not be used yet for actual
installations. It is only for testing the installer to see if it works. If
you actually want to install Debian-testing, you should install stable/woody
first and then change your apt sources and do a dist-upgrade to sarge.

As far as I know there is no automatic hardware detection that really works
well on linux (at least not on Debian, other distros may have custom build
stuff). Hotplug/DBUS should help here, but it is still beta/very alpha.
Anybody who knows better, please step in here! :)
