This is very strange.  I looked up that drive on the Sony web site and
it is definitely an ATAPI drive.  It has the same specifications as my
drive (which apparently is the OEM version of the same device), so I
have no idea what the problem might be.

I think the sarge installer is still a work in progress, so that might
be a factor.  Have you used this drive with Debian before?  My system
is currently a hybrid--Libranet installation, upgraded to sarge with a
bit of sid thrown in for good measure, although the CD-RW was
previously used with both woody and sarge.  I have installed sarge
using pgi with this CD-RW, which might work for you.
