Yeah, I also think this looks rather like a power saving problem.  It's
not just crippled NIC, but also the monitor. They seem turned off
because of that idle time period. You might want to try to fiddle with
your kernel's ACPI/APM settings or to update acpid daemon. 

Maybe just quick disabling of energy saving in BIOS and booting with
these parameters passed to lilo: "acpi=off apm=off" might indicate you
if the problem is related to that. If so, recompile your kernel with
different ACPI config - I've noticed there are some special options for
buggy BIOSes, etc.
