I'm having the same problem.  Tried:


apt-get install gnome-core

  Gnome still complains that the settings daemon cannot be found


apt-get install gnome-desktop-environment

  Apt-get says it cannot find a package by that name


apt-get install gnome

  Apt-get says there is no installation candidate (?)
