Bug#220258: Failure at cfdisk on HP Pavillion laptop

Package: installation-reports
Version: beta1

Debian-installer-version: 20031110 http://gluck.debian.org/cdimage/testing/netinst/i386/beta-1/sarge-i386-businesscard.iso
Date: 20031111 1900hrs
Method: Booted off sarge-i386-businesscard

Machine: HP Pavillion N5261
Processor: Celeron ~700MHz
Memory: 256mb
Root Device: /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/
Root Size/partition table: Output of lspci:

Base System Installation Checklist:

Initial boot worked: [O]
Configure network HW: [O]
Config network: [O]
Detect CD: [O]
Load installer modules: [O]
Detect hard drives: [O]
Partition hard drives: [E]

Recieve error "FATAL ERROR: Cannot open disk drive\nPress any key to exit cfdisk" (my use of \n).

However, can use parted to browse /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/disk successfully, and am able to mount a vfat partition on said drive successfully.

dmesg output available from http://icculus.org/~jcspray/debinst-dmesg

Apologies for incompleteness (lack of lspci, uname), machine not handy.

Unrelated to subject line but included due to pseudo-package nature of submission:
Additionally, although booting "cdrom" installed PCMCIA D-link 8139too device perfectly (only selected 8139too from the list), using 'net' led to a total lack of success: hardware detection said something must have gone wrong, didn't elaborate.

Many thanks.
