Bug#185238: CD images misinterpreted under windows

Package: installation-reports
Version: N/A, 20030317
Severity: wishlist

Debian CDs should behave under windows, ideally by taking no action, or by running a small (splash screen?) application from autorun.inf. While preparing to blow away Windows 2003 Server RC2 I burnt today's sarge-i386-netinst.iso image in Easy CD Creator. On completion, Windows 2003 Server (pretty much just Win2k Server + XP skin) scanned the disk and told me in a dialog labeled 'Debian testing i (E:)':

Windows can perform the same action each time you insert a disk or connect a device with this kind of file:

Pictures

What do you want Windows to do?

View a slideshow of the images
using Windows Picture and Fax Viewer

Print the pictures
using Photo Printing Wizard

Open folder to view files
using Windows Explorer

Take no action

with an 'Always do the selected action' checkbox and OK and Cancel buttons.

I imagine this is due to the pictures in the 'pics' folder.

Anyway it would be nice if these dialogs could be silenced. Previously I would have suggested a GUI for writing floppies could be created, but nowdays I'm more inclined to push for something which displays some HTML. Unfortunately creating an autorun.inf file containing:

[autorun]
OPEN=index.html

causes errors. Something like:

[autorun]
OPEN=start index.html

may work, but I'm not sure how cross platform it is. What is probably required is a call to the ShellExecute API passing the name of the HTML file (probably README.html). Although it would be trivial to write such an app, one already exists:

http://www.naughter.com/shelexec.html

I'd really like to see this implemented as I think it would make debian somewhat 'friendlier' for new users.
