I am also using the 2.4.18 kernel, with SCSI generic and SCSI cdrom
support compiled in. I don't, however, recall having to run MAKEDEV
after adding the options to the kernel to get cdrecord to work. The
sg device is used by a lot of applications - I think 'jack' used it
as well.
