I had a similar problem some times ago. It was related
to the loopback interface.
Check if the file /etc/network/interfaces contains the lines
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
then you can start the loopback interface by typing
# ifup lo
nb: it will be started automatically the next time you reboot.
