binutils upgrade, warning about bug in kernel source

hello,

i've just upgraded binutils to 2.11.92.0.12.3-6. i noticed the waring
about "kernel linf failure info". i've also read thru bugs 131071 and
122168. it appears to pertain to the build process of 2.4.16.
i am running 2.4.16-k6 which i didn't compile myself, it comes from
the kernel-image package.
will this problem affect an already-compiled kernel, or only the build
process? i'm just wondering if i should downgrade binutils and put it on
hold.
here is the warning:

You may experience problems linking older (and some newer) kernels with
this version of binutils. This is not because of a
bug in the linker, but rather a bug in the kernel source. This is
being worked out and fixed by the upstream kernel group
in newer kernels, but not all of the problems may have been fixed at
this time. Older kernel versions will almost always
exhibit the problem, however, and no attempts are being made to fix
  those that we know of.

There are a few work-arounds, but the most reliable is to edit the
linker script for your architecture (e.g.
arch/i386/vmlinux.lds) and remove the '*(.text.exit)' entry from the
'DISCARD' line. It will bloat the kernel somewhat,
  but it should link properly.

it sounds to me to only affect someone who is building a kernel, not one
who installed a pre-compiled one.... right?

tia,
jason
