How are you sure you are connected? Is it a dial up connection? Can
you 'ping' the site you are trying to reach with mozilla? Does
'ifconfig' show a real IP interface? Does 'dig' return an IP address
for the site?

You might want to try asking this question in debian-user. Much more
traffic, more people who might help.
