I always use ftp install, but I use the closest mirror.
They are usually up-to-date and in frozen shouldn't be too much dynamic
right now anyway.

I installed the version included with debian and then installed 4.0 in
/usr/local/X11R6.
This way I have no dependency problems and can still start the old xserver.
If you have problems with this ... I have a short howto somewhere.
