Installation report?

Hi!

I am currently installing potato on a slink machine. The machine is at
least 10000 kilometers away from me and I am doing this over ssh.

The machine is mainly used for mail server(qmail). There is wu-ftp
installed, ssh1, telnet, pop3. It is 486 with 32 MB RAM, no keyboard
and no monitor, ne200-pci network card.

I am reading
http://panic.et.tudelft.nl/~costar/potato/upgrade-i386/UPGRADING.html
I installed the static dpkg and apt from there.

Problems/questions

1. libpam0g was making some troubles. I had to put in
/etc/apt/apt.conf the line APT::Force-LoopBreak "true";
to be able to start the dist-upgrade. First I downloded all debs
with
apt-get -f -u -d dist-upgrade
But after that, during
apt-get -f -u dist-upgrade, I got the message about libpam0g and after
inserting the line in apt.conf, the installation started. No other pam
problems till now.
Actually the message was, that this is probably a Grave Bug, but it is
possible I did something wrong. You still may want to check about
libpam0g. I will not file a bug, because I am not sure what was the
reason.

2. Both perl-5.004 and perl-5.005 were installed and when perl-5.005
was installing I got the message, that libdb2 is using new format, but
I have 1.85 and I have to convert the formats.
It is not clear to me, can I remove perl-5.004? I have the impression,
that Debian is a clever distro and takes care about such things. I
think some more info is needed during the instalation about this perl
things.

3. This may be a real problem:

Preparing to replace ssh 1.2.26-1.2 (using
.../ssh_1%3a1.2.3-3_i386.deb) ...
Stopping Secure Shell server: sshd.
Can't locate Data/Dumper.pm in @INC (@INC contains:

/usr/local/lib/site_perl/i386-linux /usr/local/lib/site_perl
/usr/lib/perl5 /usr/lib/perl5/i386-linux/5.004 .) at

BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at
/usr/lib/perl5/Debian/DebConf/ConfigDb.pm line 218.
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/share/debconf/frontend line
9.
dpkg: error processing
/var/cache/apt/archives/ssh_1%3a1.2.3-3_i386.deb (--unpack):
subprocess pre-installation script returned error exit status 2

I solved it by installing ssh-nonfree, but it is interesting to note,
this:

Selecting previously deselected package ssh-nonfree.
Unpacking ssh-nonfree (from .../ssh-nonfree_1.2.27-6_i386.deb) ...
Setting up perl-5.005-base (5.005.03-7.1) ...
Setting up perl-5.005 (5.005.03-7.1) ...
Setting up perl-5.004 (5.004.05-6) ...
Setting up libnet-perl (1.0703-3) ...

The setting of perl packages is done AFTER ssh upgrade was attempted.
Maybe this is the reason why openssh install failed?!!!!!!!

Now rebooting... :-|

It is OK... :))
