install i386 potato/frozen (bugs?)

(when i grow up i want to be a debian tester and bug reporter)

i have a new system and want to get a basic debian system with debian,
gnome, and the other hooligans.

new system: athlon
	    3c509b eth
	    matrox g400

install: from DOS partition on hard drive
boot floppies: 2.2.7
swap=/dev/hda2
root=/dev/hda1
download: ftp://debian.ssc.com

modules:
binfmt_aout
nfs
smbfs
vfat
parport_pc
serial
3c59x
bsd_comp
dummy
ppp
matroxfb

network: on eth0

comment: connectnig to the DHCP server is tempermental (probably the
server and not boot-floppies)

info on my DHCP/BOOTP server i connect to:
http://cit.uvm.edu/network/dhcp/

why doesn't the kernel recognize my processor?

i then choose the simple method to install the operating system and
choose:
	gnome apps
	gnome desktop
	x-windows server common

all the downloads are successful, and then configuration begins, and i get
the following error right way.

debconf: Perl may be unconfigured (Can't locate Getopt/Long.pm in @INC) (@INC
contains: usr/lib/perl5/5.005/i386-linux /usr/lib/perl5/5.005
/usr/local/lib/site_perl/i386-linux /usr/local/lib/site_perl /usr/lib/perl5 .)
at (eval 1) line 3.
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at (eval 1) line 3.
) --aborting
E: Write Error - write (32 Broken pipe)
E: Failure running script dpkg-preconfigure --apt

i think this bug is partly spoken of here:

http://www.debian.org/Bugs/db/59/59101.html
http://www.debian.org/Bugs/db/59/59626.html

what's up with it? isn't potato supposed to be on the fast track to the
stable/ directory?
