AHA-2940 problem as reported by Max Bell

I have a homebuilt system at home with an AHA-2940 SCSI adapter.
Am planning to complete an installation report in a day or two but
decided to expedite this note in reply to Max's problem.

I can boot the new Potato installation CD by issuing the following
command at the boot prompt: linux gdth=disable:y. If this is not
done, it hangs at the DC930 line.

Installation of base system continues normally until reboot of the
base system, then the same problem occurrs once again. At this point,
boot the base system with the same command: linux gdth=disable:y. This
proceedure is necessary until a new kernel is built with only the
desired device drivers.
