Test report, boot floppies 2.2.3
Test report:
WERY BAD: dbootstrap wiped out ALL partitions and changed the disk geometry
(look at the end of this mail for a fdisk -l transcript)
minor: see below under "Minor stuff"
GOOD: the major perl headaches I have seen before seems to be gone

Major headache:
"Make Linux Bootable Directly From Hard Disk" from dbootstrap wiped out ALL
partitions and the disk got the new geometry 8748/64/32 instead of
the 1115/255/63 as it was the moment before
Workaround, either:
A, Use a empty disk and accept dbootstraps (?) view of the geometry from
the beginning, which causes this:
1, the Tekram card complains about the geometry (why does it do that)
2, leaves Dos/Win out in the cold, not much disk space left for them
B, Skip the "Make Linux Bootable Directly From Hard Disk" step
Start a shell
cd /target/etc
ae lilo.conf
lilo # nice I could run lilo, very good, saved my day
and reboot
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Minor stuff:
After reboot I removed pcmcia
went directly to dselect, no tasks things this time
(Alt-F2, ae /etc/apt/sources.list, ch. to deb ftp://...)
did Configure (procps and lilo was unconfigured)
did Install (got new packages) and got theese minor errors:
Missing files somewhere along the line:
/usr/lib/mime/packages/mime-support-compat
/etc/mailcap
Theese errors showed up:
Setting up lynx (2.8.2-4) ...
Cannot find termcap: Can't find a valid termcap file at
/usr/lib/perl5/5.005/Term/ReadLine.pm line 305
Setting up modutils (2.3.9-2) ...
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.2.12/net/sis900.o
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.2.12/misc/eicon.o
Hmm, that ldap thing, what is the correct choises for a standalone box?
And why is sym53c8xx compiled whith max 10MHz, a little disappointing when
you have got lvd, which is capable of 40MHz/80MB/s:
# dmesg
...
sym53c895-1-<0,*>: FAST-5 WIDE SCSI 10.0 MB/s (200 ns, offset 31)
Vendor: IBM Model: DMVS09V Rev: 0100
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 03
...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is the hardware I used this time:
AMD Athlon 500
128MB SDRAM
Tekram DC390U2W scsi lvd/wide
HD IBM DMVS09V, fresh, empty disk
Tekram DC310 scsi se/narrow
CD Plextor PX-40TS
MB Asus K7M
FD Sony
Matrox G400 16MB
Case Enlight 7237OXZ
Lots of fans and extras
(Kind of noisy, working on a quieter model)

Using boot floppies 2.2.3, and I have a mirror from ftp.lh.umu.se
(updated 2000-01-05) on my regular machine.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is how to reproduce the problem:
1, boot with a dos or win98 install floppy, make C: 1700MB, inst. win98
(or just setting c/h/s from within linux fdisk)
2, boot with (boot floppies 2.2.3) resque
3, I did all steps up to and including the "Configure the Network" stuff.
4, The first fdisk command was run (in tty2, Alt-F2)
5, I did the "Make Linux Bootable Directly From Hard Disk"
6, Next choise to show up was "Partition a Hard Disk" since
'There are no "Linux swap" partitions present...'
7, I run the second fdisk
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Second virtual screen contents (hand copied):
# fdisk -l /dev/sda
Disk /dev/sda: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 1115 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes
