I always upgrade from an xterm, I've never had any problems with it.
I suspect your student had his xdm killed while upgrading.  This
only happens if you upgrade from pre-Overfiend versions.

Why did he have to reinstall his system?  Simply restarting the upgrade
from a console should have worked.
