IIRC, there are two different sets of sound devices, OSS ones and ALSA
ones. IMHO, creating sound devices should be part of the sound
configuration steps, (we don't even ship a sound-enabled kernel, do we?).

I don't think that apt should not remove essential packages. I agree that
it should ask for confirmation, in a way it can't be answered by mistake.
And the current version (apt 0.3.3) in potato does exactly that.
The user has to type "Yes, I know this is bad." to proceed removing
essential packages.
