Debian Testing Security Advisory DTSA-26-1 December 5th, 2005
secure-testing-team@lists.alioth.debian.org Neil McGovern
http://secure-testing-master.debian.net/
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------

Package : trackballs
Vulnerability : symlink attack
Problem-Scope : remote/local
Debian-specific: No
CVE ID : None

Ulf Harnhammar notices that that trackballs follows symlinks when running as
gid games. It writes to files such as $HOME/.trackballs/[USERNAME].gmr and
$HOME/.trackballs/settings without checking if they are symlinks somewhere
else. This can be abused for overwriting or creating files wherever the games
group is allowed to do so.

For the testing distribution (etch) this is fixed in version
1.1.1-0.0etch1

For the unstable distribution (sid) this is fixed in version
1.1.1-1

This upgrade is recommended if you use trackballs.

The Debian testing security team does not track security issues for the
stable (sarge) and oldstable (woody) distributions. If stable is vulnerable,
the Debian security team will make an announcement once a fix is ready.
