Bug#536772: openssh-client: often, "Read from remote host ????: Connection reset by peer"

Package: openssh-client
Version: 1:5.1p1-5
Severity: normal

hi,

since I upgraded to Lenny, I noted a disturbing problem:
if I have a terminal with a ssh connection and I do not
hit a key for some time, or otherwise use the connection,
the connection would close with the error:
"Read from remote host [thehost]: Connection reset by peer"

This did not happen in the past.

I am posting this as a "bug" in the client,
since this morning I was monitoring a backup on 4 different hosts,
(not all running Debian), and
I went to launch, when I was back they were all dead. :-(

This "bug" happens also in very controlled environments,
such as in my home, where I have some PCs connected by
a simple net switch. So I would not think that it
is due to network failures.

May temptative guess is that some "keepalive" feature is
not working as it should, or maybe it changed its default
behaviour, or who knows.

Any help, or guidance, in debugging this?

a.
