This is a shame. I would like to vote for smartcard support (but,
unfortunately, am nowhere near being able to investigate the sort of
modification you propose.

Is size really an issue with this package? Would another option be an
openssh-client-tiny package which doesn't link against any optional
libraries, for embedded/installer use.

It seems odd that kerberos support is compiled in this way, but other
optional features are not being considered; libkrb53 is, after all,
nearly a megabyte in installed size)
