This makes sense; thanks for the analysis.

BTW, you have referred to a dpkg bug, in particular "coruption of the
status database" or such.  Can you provide a reference for this?  All
I'm aware of that dpkg was patched post-sarge to avoid conffile
prompts, and to remove obsolete conffiles.
