Bug#296811: ssh hangs---but not only ssh

Hi,

this bug is almost year open and now I hit it, too (ssh-client 4.2p1-5ubuntu1)
but I don't think it's related to ssh exclusively. Things work perfectly from
other places. This particular network is behind ADSL modem w/ NAT and firewall
(d-link DSL-G664T, nmap report linux inside). This is how it works:

1. Browsing from a browser works (gecko-based, lynx, links), wget'ting over
http
works; "telnet www.google.com 80" HANGS.

2. ssh anywhere HANGS (with the debug output as in the first post: ending with
"debug2: channel 0: open confirm rwindow 0 rmax 32768"), putty for linux WORKS
and putty over wine WORKS too; putty from windows WORKS. "telnet someserver 22"
HANGS immediately (does not even get the server hello).

I tried setting mtu on the client machine to 576 and 1500, does not help. The
very same happens on another linux box behind this modem. Evidently, the
problem is caused by both router (ssh works from other networks, including
another one with ADSL, though different provider and modem) and the client
AGENT (not the OS), for wine (I assume) uses linux IP stack anyway.

Has anyone got the answer for what might be the cause here? Any suggestions how
to debug it (ethereal, tcpdump)? Alberto: are you still having the problem? I
googled several reports of this problem with no answer whatsoever; it seems to
not depend on ssh version either.

Thanks for any help,

Vaclav Smilauer
