I changed the permissions to that of the below:

ls -l $HOME/.ssh/known_hosts
-rw-------  1 alistair alistair 1547 2005-07-03 17:58
/home/alistair/.ssh/known_hosts

Still get:

ssh foo
Warning: Permanently added 'foo,xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx' (RSA) to the list of
known hosts.
Permission denied, please try again.
Permission denied, please try again.
Permission denied (publickey,password,keyboard-interactive).
