Btw. ... you could probably think about using ucf for managing
config-files, it's a bit more flexible than dpkg-conf-handling.
You could customize the default config (like you do now) and
ucf presents the modified default to the user in a quite
dpkg-conf-like way.

Afaics, clamav does that for example.
