It looks like this was actually something hwinfo did, and not disk write access.
The hwinfo process became unkillable afterwards and blocked proper shutdown later, but the rest of the system remained stable. It also survived several rounds of bonnie++.

Do you have any suggestions for a long-term stress test I could run?
