sorry, don't know. I'm always doing:

make -j<core#> bindeb-pkg
dpkg -i ../linux-image*.dpkg

But that is even slower on weak hardware (e.g. BananaUltra) and the above
SHOULD work. Advantage comes when deleting kernels.

Somehow your vmlinuz is to short or the loader is not able to put it
in memory.
