Both systems are running 2.4.33 in the meantime. If you are interested to share my .config files I am pleased to send them to you. Never ever experienced such issues.

Hi Dieter, thanks for your mail. I've U60 Blade1000 and U2. All with two
processors. The difference among my SUNS is:
U60 & Blade use a kernel 2.6.X an U2 is a kernel 2.4.X,
U60 with sarge and Blade with SID.
U60 & Blade shutdown without problems ...
It's the first time that I've a U2 and I use
it as a net server, so I prefere to use a 2.4 kernel.
I download kernels from kernel.org (I've always done so ...). If you want
to send me your config, use this address amadesani@libero.it.
Tell me exactly what kind of kernel you use so I try to reproduce your
situation and I check if works correctly on my U2.
Cheers
Antonio

p.s. If you want I'll send you my smp-config ;)
