on my ultra 10 i have two disks:
hda: 8404830 sectors (4303 MB), CHS=8894/15/63, (U)DMA (orginal ;)
hdc: 78165360 sectors (40021 MB) w/2048KiB Cache, CHS=77545/16/63, (U)DMA

both works fine, without any problems.
maybe problem is with booting - i dont know - i use silo on
first(smaller) disk.
